1- HREELS: High Resolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

Surface analysis technique to study the interaction of electrons with the surface (~1nm depth), which lose their energy exciting vibrational and electronic states and promoting ionizations. Requires conducting or semi-conducting samples.

2 – XPS: X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy.

Surface analysis technique to study the elemental chemical composition of the surfaces (~10 nm depth). Any solid surface can be analyzed as long as the vapor tension of all its components can withstand UHV.

Both spectrometers work under ultra-high-vacuum (UHV ~10-9 mbar).

Sample size: 10 to 15 mm wide with thickness up to ~5 nm.

It is also possible to analyze powder-like samples.

RAIRS

Ultrahigh Vacuum (10−10 Torr) Infrared Reflection Absorption System to study molecules adsorbed on metal single-crystal surfaces.

Equipped with:

A Kratos Analytical bakeable Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) chamber;

A Mattson, Research Series 1 Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer, with an external narrow-band mercury−cadmium−telluride (MCT) detector (4000–800 cm−1), from EG&G Judson. A wire-grid polarizer was placed before the detector window to select exclusively p-polarized light;

A Leda Mass Spectra Satellite quadrupole mass spectrometer used to analyze volatile products using thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDS);

A SPECS Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) three grid optics spectrometer to determine surface structures: size and shape of the surface unit cell, degree of order, and detailed atomic structure.

Lasers

The facility for measurements of decay times of fluorescence and fluorescence anisotropy is a home-built set-up with mode-locked laser excitation and time-correlated photon counting detection. The equipment is placed on a floating optical table in a controlled temperature room. The system includes two pump lasers, a mode-locked titanium:sapphire laser, a pulse selector, two ultrafast dye lasers, a microchannel plate-photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT), a Single photon timing (SPT) system and a monochromator.

The Spectra-Physics Millennia Xs CW DPSS Green Laser is an all solid state, high power, visible cw laser that provides 10W of green 532nm

output emission, for femtosecond, mode locked Ti:S laser. Millennia Xs is equipped with a power supply and a Merlin recirculation chiller.

The Spectra-PhysicsTsunami mode-locked Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser delivers continuously tuneable output emission over a broad range of near IR wavelengths (λ=700-1000nm, Imax=1.8W, t=100fs, f=80MHz). Emission at the second (λ=350-470nm) and third (λ=240-300nm) harmonics of laser is used for excitation of fluorescence of studied samples. Includes a purging system and an AOM power supply.

The APE Berlin-Germany Pulse Select pulse selector is suited for pulse selection of mode-locked lasers with repetition rate around 80MHz outside the laser cavity. Diffraction efficiency~50%, contrast ratio 100:1. Includes pulse switch driver, pulse select optics unit and cables.

The Spectra-Physics Vanguard 2000-HM532mode-locked, DPSS Green Laser (λ=532nm, I=2W, t=12ps, f=76MHz) delivers exceptional power stability and beam-pointing performance with 2 W linearly polarized, single transverse-mode, 532nm output beam. This is the best pump laser for synchronously pumped dye lasers Coherent 700, used in our experiments.

The Coherent Radiation Dye laser 700 series (λ=560-610nm, IMax=130mW, f=4MHz, t=5ps, with pumping by 2W Vanguard) is used for excitation of fluorescence of studied samples with emission at first and second (λ=280-305nm) harmonics of the dye laser. Includes cavity dumper, driver and dye circulator.

The Coherent Radiation Dye laser 700 series (λ=610-680nm, IMax=130mW, f=4MHz, t=5ps, with pumping by 2W Vanguard) is used for excitation of fluorescence of studied samples with emission at first and second (λ=305-340nm) harmonics of the dye laser. Includes cavity dumper, driver and dye circulator.

The Hamamatsu R2809U-01 MCP-PMT (FWHM=35ps, spectral response -290-700nm) is used for detection of fluorescence of studied samples in time correlated single photon counting experiments. Due to the small transit time spread of the photoelectrons, microchannel PMT has the fastest time response (IRF) in TCSPC experiments. Accessories include a thermoelectric cooling unit, a high speed amplifier and a bench top high voltage power supply.

The Canberra Nuclear Instrumentation Modules (NIM) TCSPC system is used in fluorescence lifetime measurements. TCSPC, based on the detection of single photons of periodic light signal, has a far better time resolution and dynamic range than any analogue recording technique. Accessories include: CFD 2126, TAC/SCA 2145, biased amplifier 1467, ND582 ADC, power supply 2100, NIM bin, delay lines.

The Jobin Yvon HR 320 Monochromator (20nm/mm with 100 g/mm grating, F=1/4.2) is used to select the wavelength of emission. Includes 300g/mm and 600g/mm gratings.

Flash Photolysis (DRLFP/TLFP)

DRLFP/TLFP

Diffuse Reflectance Laser Flash Photolysis (DRLFP) and Transmission Laser Flash Photolysis (TLFP). Time resolved absorption spectra of excited states, with time resolution from ns to s. Useful to study photochemical processes resulting from the adsorption of probes in nanocavities.

The main excitation source is a high power Nd-YAG laser (10 to 1200 mJ/P) with Xe (450 W) and W QTH (250 W) lamps. The spectral range goes from 250 to 950 nm.

The spectroscopic information is obtained with ICCDs and the kinetic information with PMs.

Microscopy

Leica TCS-SP5 Multiphoton/Confocal Fluorescence Microscope

Leica TCS-SP5

The Leica TCS confocal microscope allows the examination of fluorescent specimens with clarity and resolution that far exceeds that of conventional fluorescence microscopy. The fluorophrores are excited in a very narrow plane using laser illumination. The stimulated emissions are also collected from that narrow plane using sensitive photomultiplier tubes that detect light of only the selected wavelengths. The Leica software allows image manipulations for 3-D reconstruction of optical sections, creation of movies showing rotation of images, and sophisticated calculations of intensities and ratios.

Available techniques are: Imaging (2D and 3D) with simultaneous detection of up to two colors, Förster Resonant Energy Transfer imaging (FRET), Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP), Fluorescence Loss in Photobleaching (FLIP), Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIM).

Accessories include: CW lasers: Ar ion (458, 465, 488, 496 and 514 nm) and HeNe (633 nm) Pulsed lasers: Ti:Saphire (710-990 nm, 100 fs, 80 MHz); Autocorrelator and two APDs set for single molecule FCS; TCSPC module coupled to a DCC-100 PMT for FLIM.

Polarized light is a contrast-enhancing technique that improves the quality of the image obtained with birefringent materials.
